Things to know for an airboat ride

At Airboat Rides at Midway, in Christmas, Florida, we have the luxury of being out on the water year-round. However, summertime in Florida means weather patterns can take on some unique qualities.

If you are booking an airboat tour this Summer, here are a few things you should know.

Generally speaking, here in Florida, Summer means hot and humid conditions. However, Summer can also bring an increased chance of inclement weather. During inclement weather, Airboat Rides at Midway does not run tours in the rain, so you may have to wait for it to clear up, and guests should check weather conditions the morning of their scheduled tour. Bring a poncho with you in case it starts raining while you are out on the airboat.

We recommend booking airboat tours in the morning, as the temperatures are a little cooler, there is a lower chance of rain, and more of a fulfilling wildlife experience while on tour.

Lathering up on sunscreen is an important step to decrease your chances of sunburn because you are still in the Sunshine State, after all. Staff recommends guests wear shorts, a t-shirt or blouse, and a pair of flip-flops or sandals during the Summer months, and any skin exposed to the sun should also have an extra layer of protection. Even though you are gliding down the St. John’s River while on tour, you are exposing yourself to harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Guests should avoid wearing hats, and long hair should be pulled back in a ponytail, as the Airboats can travel up to 45 MPH while gliding down the river, but they do not maintain that speed the entire tour. Your hair will fly out of control while you are on an airboat if it is not in a ponytail, and staff recommends that you bring a hairbrush or a hat for when you are back on land. Sunglasses are strongly encouraged while on tour.

Summer is a time for adventures and taking an Airboat Tour with Airboat Rides at Midway is an adventure for the whole family. Our guests are in good hands with our friendly, knowledgeable, and experienced staff at the helm of our United States Coast Guard (USCG) certified fleet.
